I recently had the privilege of attending the ASA Women in Industry conference in Nashville, Tennessee, an event dedicated to supporting and empowering women in the plumbing, heating, cooling, and piping (PHCP) industry. The conference provided a platform for networking, professional development, and discussing important issues facing women in the field.
One of the highlights of the event was a keynote speech by AmyK, creator of “She Gets It,” where she shared invaluable insights on navigating tough conversations and shaping our reality through the power of mindset and communication.

AmyK outlined four key tenets that have since become foundational to my approach in both personal and professional interactions:
- life happens one conversation at a time: Each conversation we have is an opportunity to connect, learn, and grow. By approaching conversations with energy and inclusivity, we can foster engaged and robust dialogues that lead to positive outcomes.
- quality conversations, quality life: The quality of our lives is directly linked to the quality of our conversations. By prioritizing meaningful interactions and empathetic communication, we can enrich our relationships and experiences.
- the life you desire on the other side of a tough conversation: Often, the most challenging conversations are the ones that lead to the greatest growth. By embracing tough conversations and navigating them successfully, we can move closer to our goals and aspirations.
- empathy and understanding in tough conversations: Empathy is key in navigating tough conversations. AmyK emphasized the importance of leading with “a soft heart while keeping a strong spine” and cultivating “empathetic intelligence” to ensure all parties feel seen, heard, and understood.
Following these tenets, AmyK introduced the concept of “aligning brilliance,” a framework for structuring conversations that start and end with a focus on strengths, what’s working, objectives, payoffs, concerns, and tweaks. This approach ensures that conversations are constructive and solutions-oriented, leading to positive outcomes for all parties involved.

AmyK’s teachings also include the C.T.F.A.R. framework—Circumstance, Thought, Feelings, Action, Result—which highlights the role of our thoughts in shaping our reality. By being mindful of our self-talk and beliefs, we can influence our feelings and actions, ultimately leading to the outcomes we desire.
One of the most impactful lessons I took away from AmyK’s talk was the idea that “your perception is your reality.” This resonated deeply with me, as it reaffirmed my belief in the power of mindset and self-perception in shaping our experiences.

Attending the ASA Women in Industry conference was a transformative experience that not only provided me with valuable insights and tools but also connected me with a community of like-minded women. The conference highlighted the importance of supporting and empowering women in the industry, and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a meaningful event.
In, conclusion, the ASA Women in Industry conference was a reminder of the importance of fostering open and honest dialogues, embracing tough conversations, and approaching life with empathy and understanding. I am excited to apply these lessons in my journey as a leader in the industry and continue to grow and learn from the experiences of those around me.
